Mrs D

This is really detailed and there is lots of great stuff here. Well done. I like the 'Stage 32' network. To improve use more technical details in your RMA analysis and use the animatronics to show the camera movement etc. Keep referring to the marking criteria for construction.

Final plot description

The title of the film will be 'Retribution'. It will be a crime thriller based film that will also contain action scenes. I understand that i have not analysed many crime genre based RMAs, however i feel like i learned a lot by analysing similar types of clips and they have all helped me to realise what is needed in a film based on this genre. I have also done a great amount of further research as to how opening scenes in these films are put together. The plot idea is that the protagonist is a young secret agent who had very high potential but was kicked off the agency as he had to kill his partner in the past for reasons unknown. Someone finds out what he had to do which forces him to return to his previous life and relive certain memories he tried to forget.

The Opening Scene will be a short clip of the protagonist in his home where he is working away on a computer. It will be raining outside and very dull which gives off a sense of mystery and negativity. He will get up out of his chair and stare out of a window and look at the rain. This will trigger him to remember something inside his head and we will use an intense close up of his face to show that he is picturing it in his head. We will play noises and some very short dialouge e.g. screaming and a gunshot over the top of the video so we know what he is thinking of. However we will not reveal exactly what it is. It will cause him to go to another room and look at some of his posessions and files from the past where he was a secret agent and he will open a case with a gun and a file named 'Retribution' in it.

We will include an idea that we can carry throughout the scene. The character will have an obsession with keeping things straight and in order. We will use a rule of three to show this. He will be at his desk and have some pencils lined up in a row on the desk and one wont be straight and he will allign it so that it is level with the others. When he is looking out of the windown he will clean his glasses. When he is downstairs in the cellar, he will begin to clean the gun which is in the case. We have also finally decided to use the two settings of the Office in my house and My cellar. We will use all of the props shown in the photo we posted of potential ideas in a previous post.

We will use continuity editing, eye line matching and low key lighting which we feel will all add to a great sense of verisimilitude.

I am going to great a personal profile in which i can post updates about what i am doing and hopefully gain a great amount of constructive criticism and feedback from a variety of proffssionals.

I have posted two brief posts about what I am working on for my coursework and have requested a variety of people to join my network and give me some feedback on my Idea -

I will next update you about how Stage 32 is assiting me with feedback when i recieve a comment on any of my posts.

Test shots of props and rooms

Crime drama Anaylsis

A majority of crime films are based around plays or novels, however some of the most successful ones have been produced without inspiration. They often open with scenes of a crime witness at court or an anacdote that is to do with the main storyline and this is how I will open my scene.

Examples of Crime thrillers include: "The Dark Knight", "Silence of the lambs" and "Untraceable".

Feeback

I posted my animatronics storyboard onto facebook and gained a small amount of feedback.

Adam is currently studying media within the film industry at university and is in his 3rd year. He has worked as an audio assistant on many different film sets and is currently editing his own movie that he has put together with other students. He has given me some very good feedback. I did not explain very well in my post that this is meant to be an opening scene to a feature film rather than a short film, however this shows me that i may need to be careful with the plot as it could give off mixed signals. I am very happy that he noticed that there will not be any if not no dialogue which is a major feature of my idea. And, he also thinks that my plot fits my genre which is very encouraging.
After reviewing the feedback, I realise that i need to make sure my scene does not have a specific ending and will leave the audience wanting more otherwise they may feel that it is a short film rather than an opening scene to a film. Also, adam seems to think that this will be 3-4 minutes long and i think i will cut down the amount of things i include in this scene.

Pitch Feedback

After I presented my Pitch to the class they gave me some feedback.

Positive Fededback -
1. They all agreed that the name of the film was very good so we have decided to stick with the name.
2. They also agreed that the company name and logo souned and looked professional.
3. They thought that the plot is very good and interesting which would manage to grab the viewers attention.
4. They also liked the idea of a possible narrative opening as they think it could be very effective.

Negative Feedback -
1. The audience were not so sure whether we would be able to create the setting we were describing.
2. The audience also felt that there might be a struggle to find an older actor that would play our character.
3. The audience felt that we should look at one or two more RMAs so that we can decide on what to include in our final idea.
4. They also said that there may be a struggle to do an action genre as many of them have big budgets and are hard to re-create. However, not all of them start with a big piece of action which is why we think we can fulfill our brief.

After listening to feedback we have decided to make some changes to our idea:

  • We have decided to use a slightly younger character of about 21 years of age who has been kicked off of a secret agency due to rulebreaking rather than someone who is retired.
  • We have also managed to find a settign which we can use. I have a cellar which we can make look like the type of room that we had in mind and I will post a picture of it on my potential test shots/locations post.

Pitch

I have put some posts up on social network asking for some audience feedback on the plot idea, distribution company logo and the mood board.

Moodboard + Brand Image

Here is a copy of my final moodboard:

I feel that these pictures really represent my film idea very well. The film is of the action/crime genre and the title of the film is 'Retribution'. The majority of colours used here are very dull and this is a feel i am trying to create. This will be a very dark film with a tense storyline which is why i feel that there coulours give across that idea as there is a lack of emotion during this movie. The guns and crosshairs in this moodboard represent features that happen in this film and is a big part of the plot. Also, the title 'Retribution' gives off the idea that there is some sort of punishment behind this film. That is why i have chosen a picture of a boy trapped behind some metal fence. That image shows how someone is trapped. (I produced this mood board using Serif page plus 6)

Here is a final copy of my brand image for my distribution company:

I have chosen the name 'Pinnacle Entertainment' as i feel that the word pinnacle suggests that the company is at the top of everything as this is to do with what the definiton of the word pinnacle is. I have also chosen a star as the focal point of the logo as they are associated with the sky and night time, which appeals to an upper market more than daytime.

Animatronics Storyboard.

Here are the images of all the shots that we drew for our storyboard before we put them together in a animatronics storyboard.

We are looking to use a maximum of 12 shots so we will have to choose a few of these to get rid off or merge together.

Skyfall media artefact

Skyfall

The opening sequence for Skyfall is very clever and exacting. Non-continuity editing is used at the start so that the film because the opening sequence contrasts between two different locations, the first one is the car chase through the city and the next scene is where Dench and her worker are situated in a relaxed office. The transitions are quick and unnoticeable which is good. There are many quick cuts and the film runs at a very fast pace, this makes sense as the film is an action thriller and straight from the start you are aware that this movie is action packed. Quick cuts from one scene to another make the scenes more dramatic and make it look as if there are many things going on. There are many synchronous sounds used at the start, for example we hear a lot of car horns but we can also see many cars on the street. We see and hear James bond load his gun in the car as he stares at the car in front. This makes the audience start to think he's going to shoot this person in front

List of ideas for opening film scene

My first idea is a chase scene. The scene will start off with two people confirming a deal across a table in a coffee shop. There will not be any dialogue between the characters. The protaginist will exit the shop and look at his which where he will tip his takeaway coffee upside down and spill on himself. In this split second where he is looking down at his shirt, someone will run into him and steal his briefcase from him. There will then be a chase on foot through a city/town and it will result in the thief driving away in a car at the end and opening the briefcase.

My second idea for a film is there is an interview film and there is a mna in a chair on one side of the table and he is looking at the table and playing with his hands. There is no music in this scene, as the only sounds you hear is the footsteps of another person entering the room. This person who just entered the room is wearing a suit and the viewers will think that this person is the good guy but as soon as this person sits down the ohter perosn who was already in the room looks up and starts the interview as the good guy police man.

My second idea is a short narrative scene. It will be a very slow paced scene with long takes in which the protaginist is in his house sorting out some of his equipment and paperwork. E.g. some weapons or important documents in a filing cabinet. There will be narration over the top which is their voice and he will be talking about an anacdote that will be important the main storyline later on in the movie. I will also use a close up on his face to show the tension that he feels behind the story. The shots that i choose to use should also feature locations that would be prominant in the film later on.
